Give an example of a mistake you (or another person) made because you were unaware of the cultural standards in which you found yourself?

On a job I had in the past the culture was one of high collaboration. I was new to the organization and didn’t know that. I came from a place wheee you get ahead because you have all the best ideas. I came in very competitive and hurt my relationships because I was unaware of the company culture.

One of my greatest challenges I deals with is some of the gospel music that is played and sung today . At times Its hard to distinguish between worldly music and gospel music. One day I verbally criticize gospel rap and one of the younger generation took offense to my statement. In our world gospel music was taken from the word of God and not from a world view . The beat and the choreography shouldn’t move a person more than the word of God. This is an tragedy . The gospel should not only be preached but sung to the glory of God.

Making a statement to a group that I did not realize was insensitive due to the background and culture, it was something that was not bothersome outside of the culture solely within.

When speaking , I’m very prayerful in what I speak about and pray for direction and wisdom from the Holy Spirit. The Best message that someone can give is one that they themselves have personally experienced.
I personally can’t give an example of a mistake I’ve made due to being unaware of culture standards. Subjects I don’t are political and racial.
My message comes strictly from Gods word. I strive to stay sensitive to the Holy Spirit when speaking.

I came from a rural upbringing, but not in a farming community. I knew a lot of farmers, but I knew nothing about farming.

The church I started to attend as an adult, was a rural church, filled with farmers, wives of farmers, and kids that wanted to be farmers. I just wanted to fit in. While listening to a conversation between a couple of the members, I heard them talking about cutting their corn. I decided to try and join the conversation, but asking if they are cutting early so they could get a second cutting. Little did I know you never get a second cut of corn, that term I’d overheard others refer to was for hay farming. I had just found myself being looked at like I had 3 heads. Even a couple kids were giggling.

I learned something. When you don’t know something, it’s much easier to not pretend you do. People respect people who ask learning questions, and they laugh at people who make dumb statements.
