Dr. Gruden is for the charismatics to be careful in their vocabulary. Not using phrases as “Lord told me,” which would alienate non-charismatic people who understand that word from the interaction with charismatic Pentecostals historically might be inaccurate. Furthermore, he is saying to non-charismatic people that the word prophecy is a good word and that there are prophets in our churches. They are not infallible. They need to be tested as they did in John’s writings and so forth. So let me come to a definition of his understanding of congregational prophecy. Basically, he is saying to charismatics, be a little more careful and constricted. He is saying to non-charismatics that there are prophets in the New Testament that are not authoritative, whose word is not to be taken as law.
