They wandered in the wilderness for 40 years because when they sent 12 spies into the promised 10 of them came back with bad report. They reported of giants in the land of Canaan. The people were afraid of the giants and prayed to God not to make them enter. God granted their request by having them wander until the current generation had all passed away
