  What did you learn about the Sermon on the Mount and/or Matthew’s gospel that you didn’t know prior to taking this lesson?

  I never thought of Jesus countercultural teaching as being like the Essenes, except that His followers are to live them outwardly. The Essenes withdrew from the world while Jesus wanted Him and His followers to work in full daylight. This shows that Jesus really did intend to save the world.

  This is one of my favorite passages and each time I read it or study it I am amazed at how much it encapsulates Jesus’ teachings and how vital it is for Christ followers who want to “walk the second mile” with the Lord know the Sermon on the Mount and know it well.
  I had not thought of Jesus being seen as the new Moses but that is true in that He was leading the people in something new and, yes, radical to what they believed at the time. I have always seen Him as being “counter-culture” because He literally turned the world on its ear and spun it around, thank you, Jesus.

  Matthew 5:2 Jesus waited to speak while everyone was coming to listen to him. He was patient sincere, kind,and with each verse he spoke sayin”Blessed are”, for each person that someone goes through or searches he blesses them.

  I never realized the detailed framework of this gospel but it makes sense since Matthew was a tax collector and his job required precision and accuracy; order.
