Proverbs 3: 27-28 “Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to act. Do not say to your neighbor, ‘Come back tomorrow and I’ll give it to you’— when you already have it with you.” We are called to be the hands and feet of Jesus. To do good is to meet a need at the time it is presented. To wait is to possibly miss the opportunity altogether.

Choose one of the proverbs and explain how it can be applied today

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding. Acknowledge Him in all you ways. Then He will make your path straight.” (Proverbs 3:5-6)

This proverb teaches us the importance of humility. The teacher of the proverb, King Solomon, had everything people would desire – wealth, reputation, knowledge, wisdom – and many wives and concubines. In spite of all those good things, Solomon came to the conclusion that faith and personal relationship with God is the true ingredient for success and happiness. In order to trust in the Lord and not lean on our own understanding, we must understand how limited our strengths, understanding, and wisdom are. That requires humility. It will also lead us to trust in Him and follow His ways and guidance on a daily basis.

The proverb is also the exact opposite of today’s popular philosophy “Believe in yourself.” The sad reality of believing oneself is that nobody is perfect so we can never put full trust in ourselves. Proverbs 3:5-6 serves as much comfort to those who realize how powerless people are. It also points us to God to whom we can put our complete trust as we live each day.

Proverbs 9:7 says, “Whoever corrects a mocker invites insults; whoever rebukes the wicked incurs abuse.”
What immediately comes to my mind with applying this Proverb in today’s age is the comment sections of social media platforms such as twitter, Instagram, and the like. So often, you will see people trying to correct those who are clearly mockers in the comment section and what will happen is they get sucked into a debate that draws them into a trap of abuse and insult. It is so important to try and engage with fellow commenters who are there to have meaningful dialogue. The words we say may pour out of our fingers onto the keyboard and onto the comment section but they are very much still from our tongues. What we say, how we say it, and to whom we say it matters.

    Proverbs 12

We see that “knowledge” has become so popular today. Information is a fingertip away with the use of our smart phones and devices. But, real instruction involves discipline, and comes from Wisdom- the Fear of the Lord. We see that many feel that they know what’s best, and they are entitled to do whatever their heart/feelings lead them to do. A lot of people resent correction, yet if we want Wisdom, we will value correction.
It talks about the wicked, and the fool, and the difference between those who are wicked, who are foolish, who lie, and those who are wise, who love wisdom, who work hard- the good man. This all is so relevant to today’s society and people. Many want everything given to them easily, with no work. “Work hard and become a leader; be lazy and never succeed. ” “The path of the godly leads to life.”

Life is hard, choices are many, and young people will have the opportunity (and responsibility) to make choices, some of them difficult, many of them which will last a lifetime. The Proverbs are good to take into a young heart and mind, but more importantly is getting young people into the Proverbs, to live them for themselves. I would think it important to challenge youth to explain what a proverb means and guide them in any misapplication or fill in missing understanding. That would help give them “ownership” in the Proverbs.

The book of Proverbs provides many great practical advices for parents, teachers and leaders training young people. A lot of the issues young people go through are discussed in the book of proverbs. Most young people are just experiencing life issues for the first time. The wisdom or advise of someone that is older and had experienced many of lives issues and has learned from them can be very helpful in giving advice if the audience is willing to listen.

How might the book of Proverbs be useful in training young people

“Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not turn from it.” (Proverbs 22:6)

The book of Proverbs is extremely useful in training young people. I have had the privilege of teaching in a Christian school in Japan for the past fourteen years, and I have been working with 8th graders on a daily basis. During homeroom every morning, I have been using the book of Proverbs with those young students during the past 14 years.

The book of Proverbs is extremely useful because both Christians or non-Christians can easily understand the contents of the book. The topics covered in the book, written 3000 years ago, are still relevant today. The topic of making right decisions in our lives – especially how to use our tongues and maintaining positive relationships – is very relevant for the adolescents going through puberty – learning to make right decisions on their own. The book also recommends us that we ought to be humble and listen to other people’s advice and instructions. Once a non-Christian middle school student shared with me that he had enjoyed reading the book of proverbs because he could feel that he was being led in the right path.

The book also teaches us the importance of humility before God. It teaches us that, even though we study very hard, our knowledge will still be limited. We do not know what will happen next – say the pandemic as an example. By reading the book of Proverbs, we can understand that God is in control and that we ought to submit and trust in His care and guidance – through prayers and reading of His word.

I really enjoyed how, during the end of the lecture, Dr. Stuart reigns in the focus of specific ways Proverbs can practically be taught and used when training up our young people! He gives the suggestion of choosing one to read at the dinner table with your children and then having a discussion about its meaning. With having two teenage boys, I understand well that at the dinner table, they will not offer too much explanation about how their days have been going. But doing this together as a family is a great way to have a meaningful conversation starter and could easily open doors to discussion about their lives. Additionally, I agree that using them specifically with youth group should be happening much more frequently. The aspect that reading Proverbs is like figuring out a puzzle appeals to young people. Because of the way the book is constructed, these proverbs are provided in short, small chunks that are more easily digested and implemented by not only young people but people of all ages!
