I think Elijah needed to continue to pray for the benefit of his servant. While Elijah knew that God would honor His word, perhaps his servant wasn’t so sure and needed to see the proof. Even if Elijah had stopped praying, God would have honored His promise for rain.

Obedience to God is why he continued to pray, had he stopped the rain would never have came because of his disobedience.

If Elijah stopped praying after the sixth time, God would have sent the rain as promised but if Elijah had stopped praying he would not have witnessed the supernatural power of his perseverance in prayer.

Although God had promised rain would come, Elijah knew that he needed to stay in prayer, since it was an important part of the promise.
If Elijah had stopped praying after the sixth try, I do believe that rain would have still come. However, it would not have come then and may have been a very long time before it did rain.

Elijah needed to continue to persevere in prayer because God wanted him to continue doing his part. As C. S. Lewis said, as God’s fellow worker we have to be a joint worker with God to accomplish the task. Elijah knew that God had promised rain and he also knew that God wanted him to continue persevering in prayer.
After the sixth try, I think that God might just delayed the rain from coming but not have stopped it, because of his promised. He wanted to ensure that Elijah will continue doing his part.
