The difference between these two books is that Proverbs was written at the beginning of his reign when he was not a wealthy man and was just trying to figure things out. He wrote them as a testament of wisdom to his son. This was at a time in his life that he was very reliant on God to help him be successful. Ecclesiastes was written later in life after he did not follow what the Lord had told him to do. He had begun backsliding away from the Lord and began being rather boastful and arrogant. He wrote this one to say that the world and everything in it is meaningless and brings absolutely no joy. When truly God is our joy and without Him, the world is pretty meaningless.
