It is a text with no wasted words and filled with details. I look at the Book of Ruth as a turning point in the Old Testament writings. One of its primary themes is of hospitality to the stranger. After the loss of her husband, Ruth travels with her mother-in-law, Naomi as they journey from the land of their deceased husbands to Naomi’s homeland; Bethlehem.
These two women land themselves in the town of “bread” where Jesus, the bread of life will one day be born. It is a love story between Ruth and her kinsman Boaz. While this particular detail does not further the Old Testament story either, it does make possible two profound leaders; one in the Old Testament and one in The New Testament. This short story in its placement in the whole of the Old Testament allows a brief break from the Old Testament story. It points directly to King David and Jesus. At the conclusion of this writing we read a glimpse into the future in the genealogy of Ruth. The text provides Ruth’s lineage naming her great grandmother to King David and ancestor to Jesus.

Although it is a beautiful story, it doesn’t move the story forward about the history of the Israelites. It demonstrates God’s love and the manifestation of His promises for all.
