The book of Ruth is a color book because it includes important events that add details to the main plot. However, it does not keep the story moving like the time books do.

While Ruth is part of the Old Testament story, it is an extension-addition to the Time-Narrative old testament books. Ruth adds another part of the overall story in the Judges period.

It doesn’t move the “Big Story” forward from one point in time to another point in time. It gives more detail and important information but doesn’t form part of the narrative.

According to Dr. Buzzell books in the Bible can be categorized as “color” or “time”. Book that progress the story forward are categorized at “time”, compared to “color” books which add important details to the story. I believe that Dr. Buzzell grouped the book of Ruth into the “color” category because this story gives important details about a woman and her mother-in-law. The story paints a beautiful picture of love and how Ruth stood by Naomi, even during difficult times. Ultimately, Ruth’s devotion to her family lead her to Boaz. The detail of this story highlight the themes of devotion and obedience, thus the book of Ruth is best categorized as “color”.

Ruth is considered a color book because it doesn’t move the story forward. It is a book that gives more detail to the story but does not give important details to advance it.
