    Because it really doesn’t add to the main story of the Bible but it does add a view of the life the people lived at that time.

    Ruth is called a “color” book because it does not move the narrative forward, it adds to the context of what was going on in that time.

    Because Ruth adds details to the main plot but it doesn’t move the story forward.

    The book of Ruth adds details and specific person’s account during a period of time. This person’s account does not add the chronological order of events, rather is added context, and first person account of the situation and struggles during Ruth’s time. It adds her connection to the historical time line of the lineage of Jesus and not specifically to the historical events with in the time prior to Jesus. These added details provide more insight during this time and thus by definition is a color book.

    The book of Ruth like the other “color” books add details to the continuing story but does not move the story forward.
