It allows us to see what is going on at the time of the writing. Historical is the history while cultural would tell us everything going on from the standpoint of government, family, place, etc. literary tells us the genre of the writing and that ties into the grammatical aspect of the writing.

Historical gives us the history of what we are studying

Cultural gives us what is going on at the present time with the culture. Such as family, community, law and religious

Literary gives us genra or writing style

Grammatical is about the grammar such as noun, pronouns, adjectives, direct and indirect objects. This is extremely important because if a verse says “him” you need to be able to know who “him” is.

The historical, grammatical, literary and cultural study of a passage help to surface the details we must attend to in order to understand the author’s intended meaning and how the original audience would have perceived it.

[In Bible study, what might result if we never use observation and interpretation and only use application?] We would tend to miss the meaning of Scripture because it would be obscured by cultural, linguistic, and historical differences between ourselves and the authors and readers of the original documents. Then, we would tend to impose our own meanings.

[In Bible study, what might result if we never use observation and interpretation and only use application?] We will be stuck as Christian on the knowledge and understanding of our faith and the ways that the Lord wants us to live.
