I always thought that there should be some categorization of the Psalms into different types, but never knew how to do that. It is eye opening how the Psalms can reach into every area of life we may encounter. Knowing that they are God’s words to us will help with comfort and understanding. Using them as examples of prayer can help us focus our prayers and thus better commune with God.

How could an understanding of the ten basic psalm types benefit a person’s devotional life?

Understanding the 10 basic psalm types provides an excellent way of enriching our daily prayers and worship. It enables us to make sense of the various purposes and meanings behind those psalms. By understanding the purposes, we can also effectively incorporate the psalms into church services as well as prayer meetings.

As Dr. Stuart explained in the lecture, the book of psalms contain a rich variety of prayer samples. Christians are sometimes encouraged to pray to God in terms of the four famous themes – confession, thanksgiving, supplication, and intercession. Understanding the ten themes of psalms, combined with those four themes, will help us to learn how to pray more meaningfully. For instance, Psalm 23 is a trust psalm that Christians can use as a way to express our trust in Jesus Christ. As a matter of fact, the psalm has been used as a hymn throughout the church history. Psalm 8 is an example of enthronement psalm which can be recited to praise our God. Psalm 70 is an example of lament psalm through which Christians can learn that we can be very honest with God when we are in trouble.

Knowing the ten basic varieties of psalms empowers a person to target and to be intentional about choosing a specific psalm that can minister to them no matter where they find themselves in their devotional life. They tie together both great knowledge and great emotion and are helpful in articulating what can sometimes be difficult otherwise. The authenticity of where the psalmist composed any given Psalm can be a tremendous comfort when we are meeting with issues in our own spiritual walks with the Lord.

By understanding the ten basic psalm types, it allows us to use it in our devotions. As you are experiencing different things in life, you can read the Psalms that apply to that type of situation and identify with the psalter. They also apply to your prayer and worship, based on the different types of situation and psalm that applies to it.
