Describe the tension that exists between the books of Proverbs and Ecclesiastes.

Ecclesiastes (The Preacher) and Proverbs were both written by King Solomon. The difference between these two books is that Proverbs was written at the beginning of his reign when he was not a wealthy man and was just trying to figure things out. He wrote them as a testament of wisdom to his son. This was at a time in his life that he was very reliant on God to help him be successful. Ecclesiastes was written later in life after he did not follow what the Lord had told him to do. He had begun backsliding away from the Lord and began being rather boastful and arrogant. He wrote this one to say that the world and everything in it is meaningless and brings absolutely no joy. When truly God is our joy and without Him, the world is pretty meaningless.

Proverbs is a guide of how to live a Godly life that in Ecclesiastes is described as a life we will never fully understand.

Proverbs tells us how to walk with God, follow His commands and live a good life, while Ecclesiastes shows us that there will be many time we do not understand what is happening.

I believe the tension is between your view. Ecclesiastes I feel is a worldly view whereas Proverbs is from a Godly view.

The book of Proverbs contains wise observations of life. What results can we expect from following them?

Though Proverbs does not contain any promises, the wisdom contained in these proverbs will help us obtain an inner wholeness and a closer image of Jesus within ourselves.

Following the words in Proverbs will allow us to live a better life but do not promise anything to us. I allows us to live our lives in a closer connection to God.

Following them will help us live according to God’s ways and will. It doesn’t promise us anything but ensures us the probability of following God’s ways and wisdom to have a life meaningful and full.

If we follow the wise observations provided in Proverbs, we can expect to live more Godly and be blessed by God. We will be better prepared to follow God even when hardships come.
